Elise watched from the balcony. As large as the building was, the
eagle's size and speed seemed to suck in the dimensions tightly.
Though Elise could no longer hear the collar, she knew the succession
of the beeps would speed up as the raptor drew near to her target.
Kara flew by the mannequins, just three feet over their heads. The
gifted raptor would sense the timing change of the collar's beeps
and would now have to choose her target. One pass was all she was
allowed.
She banked sharply at the top of the ceiling and tucked her wings.
Her dive was rapid for the relatively short distance she'd traveled.
In an instant, her massive claws were out and her sharp talons struck
hard and deep, ripping off the head of the male mannequin. A moment
later, she swooped lightly onto Annette's gauntlet and was immediately
rewarded with a dead rooster chick.
Kara then obediently took her place back on her perch.
Shielding her students' view again, Annette switched the locations
of the mannequins, and replaced the radiated head and neck with
a fresh one without the technetium injection. Though the gamma radiation
was safe enough to handle, the technetium's rays would be strong
enough to be picked up by the collars for the next twenty-four hours.
Now it was Rex's turn. He flew by several times without striking.
Both pupils performed perfectly, as they had done for the last few
weeks. Annette and Elise were sure they were ready. Soon
very
soon, the golden eagles would graduate.
Blaine Edwards arrived early, but saw that Elise, whatever her
last name was, was already waiting in a golf cart. She probably
couldn't wait to see him again, he thought, as his eyes took her
in. Definitely not your basic golf outfit.
Well-fitted khaki shorts without the usual frumpy pleats most of
the other women wore. She had on a white silk Ashworth top held
together with two, no, one low button.
